Fans slam Falcons over poor performance in Mexico

Falcons poor performance in Mexico

A host of fans have aimed digs at the Nigerian women’s national team, the Super Falcons, following their poor performance at the just concluded Revelations Cup in Mexico.

The Super Falcons ended the tournament positively with a 1-0 win over Costa Rica at the Estadio León in León de los Aldamas in the early hours of Wednesday.

Esther Okoronkwo’s first goal for the Super Falcons was all Nigeria needed to claim their only win at the four-nation invitational tournament.

The Falcons were nowhere close to being ‘super’ after losing their first two games to hosts Mexico and South American giants Colombia by similar 1-0 scorelines.

Down and out without a chance of winning the tournament’s trophy, the former African champions finally brought their A-game to the table against Costa Rica’s Las Ticas.

The competition, which is to prepare the Falcons for the World Cup scheduled to hold later this year, has saw fans express doubts about the team’s chances of going far in New Zealand.

Expressing his concern, Jide Oluwalana believed the Falcons would struggle at the World Cup.

“This team ain’t going anywhere in any tournament. The players are good and available but the technical desk looks poor,” he said.

Abidemi Adetunbi wrote on Twitter, “Una [Your] performance no dey [do not] give us hope. For me, I no [don’t] see una [you]going past first round, Except una [you] prove me wrong.”

Abdullahi Yaya added, “Loosing seven matches in nine games under ‘War Drum’ Waldrum. Not good enough, please. Women’s World cup around the corner.”

“You guys are not doing well at all. I’m sorry, but this team is at its weakest level in the history of Super Falcons,” Mr Stephen wrote.

Another Twitter user, Grace over Power said, “I will say congratulations to you girls, but the last run of games it’s not pleasing, and that gets me worried about the upcoming world cup, I just pray and hope this win will boost you girls mentally, I pray it’s sustained.”

The CONCACAF representatives had drawn both of their first two matches against Mexico and Colombia but they, ultimately, could not find a way back against Nigeria.

With the win, the Super Falcons halt a terrible run of seven consecutive losses in all competitions.
